Hiya

Have asked the question to Virgin via Whatsapp, but will see if anyone has any knowledge here too (and will post their reply once I get it in a few days time.

I have just switched my ticket to the US for 3rd June to an open ticket. The original booking was for 2 passengers in PE (H outbound and K return). The open ticket online now shows the class as Econ rather than PE.

So is the open ticket based on the value paid and/or the class travelled ?

My scenario is say I want to use these 2 tickets for a week in Barbados in October, so within their timeframe for rebooking with no change fees and no increase in fare, will they do with in PE ?

For info, this is the advice they gave this morning (Arile 22nd) me about rebookings...

That has now been changed to an open ticket for you, and your booking reference will remain the same. You can re-book your flights for any dates before the 31st May 2022, and you’ll just need to get in touch to re-book your ticket before the 31st December 2020. No change fee will be charged, but if travel is taken on or after the 1st December any increase in fare will apply.
Once you're ready to re-book your flights, just get back in touch and we can process this with you.

No email will be sent as the ticket is not reissued, you can see everything online.

I also have an open ticket rebooked into Economy class. I wouldn't worry about it, your cabin class much like the origin, destination and date will just be a placeholder until you rebook. Consider it more as a voucher, if you manage to find a higher cabin class for the fare you've already paid, then enjoy the extra luxury without paying more money!

Thanks, thats my concern though, I booked PE flights (which were a decent price) and would expect PE flights with the voucher, esp under their "no fare increase" offer. I don't think this part is clear on their website. Lets see what they come back with.

Was your original booking in Econ or higher ?

As far as I’m aware all bookings left open will show as economy (fare code Y) along with a flight number of YY0101 departing 00:00 and arriving 00:00 operated by YY.

Mine does and I had an Upper Class Z fare. The date of travel on mine also says Dec 31st 2020.

I presume these are all just IT dummy field fillers as your booking reference and ticket number doesn’t change.

If you try and click the ‘choose seat’ button you just get an error message.

This is the reply I got.

About your open ticket: When you log into your booking online you will see a pending flight for the 31st December 2020, it’ll automatically say Y class which is economy, but it is just to hold the booking open for you. Once the ticket has been left open, we’d ask for you to contact us to re-book travel for any date up to an including 31st May 2022. Travel must be completed by 31st May 2022. Please keep your booking reference handy and we will mirror the original booking.

I then asked for further clarification and got...

As stated above we mirror what the previous ticket was, the flight we have put in is fictitious and was put in there to keep the booking open, we can only use and Economy to do that, but I promise your booking will be what you originally had

So, the answer is yes :)
