Posting this as its own topic as I think it'll get lost in the main Flying Club Changes topic. I'll also update my Ultimate Upgrade Guide for 2025 when I get a moment too.

Since the FC changes Virgin so drastically introduced recently, it became very opaque as to what the upgrade price would be once online check in opened, when using points.

Previously, upgrades (either before check-in opened or after) were a fixed amount. That is no longer the case.

Prior to check-in opening, this is the formula (from the VS website):

If your original booking was paid for fully in money or using Points Plus Money, you’ll pay:

The price in points of your new upgraded seat less the maximum Saver reward seat price for the cabin you’re upgrading from.

Effectively, you're paying the difference between the highest saver price and the current dynamic price in points, plus taxes. I think this is more complicated than it needs to be, but it is what it is.

For reward flights its simpler, you're just paying the difference, same as it used to be.

Once check-in opens, things change a little.

If you read my Ultimate Upgrade thread, you'll notice I talk about the notion of an "upsell". This is the cash price you see in the VS app. For example, if you're flying Premium and look at the Upper Class seat map AND there are upsells available, you'll see a price in the top left corner of the seat map. You can then select a seat and pay for the upgrade in the app. These upsells are available in the app, on the phone and to the airport staff.

With the new system, cash upsells are unchanged from what I can see.

Whats new, is the cost to upgrade with points is now more closely pegged to the cost of the upsell than it was before.

Previously, it cost 40,000 points to go from Premium to Upper when flying LHR - LAX, as an example. That cost is now 114,000 + taxes. The points cost is FIXED. This may be the only fixed amount left in VS's new system.

Classic > Premium - 19,000 + £176 taxes
Classic > Upper - 139,000 + £406 taxes
Delight > Premium - 15,000 + £176 taxes
Delight > Upper - 119,000 + £406 taxes
Premium > Upper - 114,000 + £230 taxes

VS staff have a little app that calculates this stuff, hence why I can't share every route here.

My immediate thought when I saw this was - oh, they'll use the groupings they used to use for the routes. I.e. US West, US East etc. But no. SFO was the same as LAX but when we looked at JFK and IAD, IAD was way more than JFK even though they're US East in the old grouping.

My guestimate is that the new prices are based on a combination of theoretical load factors & total seats available on a route.

The way this is implemented, it's also easy for VS to changes these values more regularly than the old way.

To summarise, fixed upgrade prices on the day are possible, depending on demand. But by the looks of it, its at least 2-3x the cost in points that it used to be. I did a cash upgrade today for £749 because I deemed that to be the best value. VS are giving you a really bad exchange rate on fixed point upgrades on the day vs the cash values IMHO.

Now off to board VS23 shortly...

Ohh, bonus content, LHR Clubhouse to be refurbished starting sometime in 2025...

Thanks for this info. Adding some data of my own, I asked about an upgrade from Premium to Upper at the clubhouse for my recent LHR > MCO flight and it was 104,000 points plus tax, or £729 cash.

Interesting news about the LHR Clubhouse. Any news on the JFK one as that's is a much worse state compared to the LHR one which was only refurbed a few years ago?

On the subject of lounges, Delta also announced yesterday that SEA is getting a Delta One lounge in the summer. A couple of lounges at ATL are also getting a refurb (ones located in concourses A, C & D - no mention about the International SkyClub lounge in F though).

Last time they kept it open but blocked half of it off whilst doing the renovations in each half.

My expectation from talking with one of the execs is they’ll keep it open and do the work through the night gradually. They simply don’t have the capacity to close big chunks of the place.

Some more data points...

I just upgraded my inbound flight using a voucher that was about to expire.

All week, return one way Upper fares on both VS8 and VS24 have been 350,000 points. Upgrade was quoted at 322,000 one way, slightly less than a full reward flight (ridiculous).

Then the day before departure both 8/24 showed 1 seat available in Upper using points. However the 24 was now quoted at 240,000 points. Strange given the fact they both still showed one seat. Upgrade was quoted at 222,000+£225.

Ticket hasn't been re-issued but the PNR is now in Upper with a seat assigned however both flights still show 1 seat available for points purchase. This may be a slight change to how it used to work. I expected the seat availability to change when I took the "last" seat but that hasn't happened.

So dynamic pricing can actually go down although it's unclear as to why. I expect in this case it's because there is more than 1 seat available and VS knows it won't sell many more seats so their algorithm lowers the points price to get someone (like me) to actually take the seat.

Can someone clarify something for me, as I can't see this in the app or online.

I have a VS flight to india in a couple of days that includes a connection with a partner airline. I don’t see any upgrade options on my booking page or on the seat map. I contacted Virgin via chat and they quoted me around £1800 for an upgrade from premium to upper.

When check-in opens, does the price usually change? Is that information shown in the app or reserved for the check-in desk at the airport? Since I can’t access upgrade pricing in the app, I’m wondering if I should call them as soon as check-in opens. According to the seat map, there are only two seats left.

Also, I placed an upgrade bid that was the highest when the bidding process closed. However, earlier in the day, someone outbid me. When I placed my leading bid, the ‘Your Bid’ website said there were no seats available, even though the auction was still open. It’s a bit confusing - has anyone experienced anything similar

The price can change once check in opens. The price check in has should be the same as the price shown in the app if there is an upsell available. To see if there is, open the seat map and scroll from Premium to Upper and if a price appears in the top left corner, that is the upsell. If no price appears, that means VS aren't offering paid upgrades at the moment but that may change at the airport, its always worth asking.

I just had a bad encounter with upgrading over the phone.

LHR-SFO premium to UC, agent was quoting me the full UC points it was showing online, and not deducting the maximum saver reward seat price of the current cabin.
She kept telling me it’s what the system is saying and sometimes “upgrade with points” doesn’t work out how it says on the website….

Was really adamant that it should be 82,000 points (current UC cost for 2 adults) minus 27,500 per adult (maximum saver reward seat price in current premium seat on west coast)….

She put me on hold for 30 minutes and she spoke to a manger who then was able to get the upgrade cost to 27,000 points total and £132 of taxes…

Just wonder how many people have actually paid more for an upgrade than they should have …

That being said. £2,800 (including upgrade fee) + 27,000 points, for UC return 2 adults, LHR-SFO, LAX-LHR I think is a great deal. That’s currently retailing at £6,059 full cash booking or 400k points plus £1,740 taxes.

I just had a similarly bad encounter with an agent for the same routes. They're really trying to squeeze out that 350K or 450K points value for seats on SFO-LHR, LHR-SFO routes.

Hope you manage to get it sorted. I am finding it hit and miss with agents (even Swansea agents) these days. Sometimes it’s better to use the chat function because there you can copy and paste the website link and the information.

What really made my blood boil is when the agent replied to me ”sometimes these upgrades work out and sometimes they don’t, and today it’s not working out”… as polite as I could be I literally had to read word for word from the website around 5 times, regarding how it works for upgrading cash ticket with points before she spoke to a manager.
