I managed to upgrade to Upper Class using points and cash on Friday but the charge has still not appeared on my credit card. Is there usually a delay between booking and payment being taken?

Reservation can take your points instantly but they pass your credit card details to another department for processing. I've had this before and eventually my card got charged after about 5-7 days. As long as your ticket is reissued you should be good to go (sometimes you can't select seats if it's not done properly), but if you have any doubts just call reservation again to confirm.

Or maybe don't call them... there was one time I upgraded thru DL, they took my points, reissued the ticket but never took payment!

I recently upgraded for a flight in the summer and was told that ticketing will take 39 days so my card will be debited then.
Apparently there is a back log at ticketing so they are going in date order.

I’ve had this.

Upgraded a week ago, and had virgin points taken, but no money taken.

Contacted virgin later that day as got special assistance and couldn’t choose a seat - they assigned my seats for me.

Ticket number has stayed the same, but was a rewards booking.

Due to depart in September - should I contact them or hope they’ve forgot?

No need to call. It will be queued for manual re-ticketing. It can take anything upto 2 weeks as your departure date is still a few months away.

The money will leave your account when your booking gets re-ticketed.
