There's an articleon the BBC website on the subject of upgrades (and with the sub-title "Paid for economy, hoping for First Class"). It suggests that wearing a fake beard and pretending to be SRB's brother probably won't work. Damn!

Worth a browse, for the sake of entertainment.

Best wishes

Paul Nero, the co-author of Blagging It, says the aim is to get the stamp SFU - suitable for upgrade - on your boarding pass.

1) Oh my - what a name for a publication! [n] (I can guess it's sold in Burberry stores... [:w])

2) ISTBC, but isn't this utter rubbish anyway? What "stamp" on your boarding pass with "SFU"?!?

The cropping of the pic of SRB in the suite is a little unfortunate - they could've left a bit more of the L in Class ;)

It is amazing how much folklore there is around upgrading. And check in staff have heard it all, of course!

I do find the 'blagging' culture a little offensive: if you really think you should be turning left then you should be prepared to pay for it, and if you happen to get upgraded then accept it with great joy and good grace, rather than as your right.

The simplest way to get an ugrade is to pay.

It is down to luck at the end of the day on Virgin Atlantic, according to their spokeswoman, who adds that there's no company policy on upgrades.

Yeah right! Whether written or not there must be a policy and quite frankly I agree with BC. I always hope for an op-up when not flying UC, but if I must travel in UC/Business then I pay for it. Mrs B really gives me a hard time for making her travel in anything but these days!:D:D

Lol sounds like they're just taking off the print ad VS used to have with an Asian man with blonde hair and beard saying "Honestly, i'm Richard's brother" or something to that effect!! It was trying to sell cheap W seats i think.

LOL

The stamping of SFU on the boarding pass seems like a classic example of the BBC website getting details wrong. Do they actually have any form of editorial control/proof-reading? [V][:?]

Exactly. I do wonder where these people do their research (IF they do) [ii].

Crikey - can you imagine the horror if you walked away from the check-in desk with "NSFU" stamped in big letters on your pass for everyone to see?! [}:)][:0]

Indeed, it was part of the 'Don't try and blag an upgrade campaign' from around 2001. I have the said 'But I'm Richard's Brother' original ad framed at home in my office, a lovely lady at HQ sent it to me a while ago. Absoute brilliance again from marketing.

They are here:

If you want an upgrade, a better way of getting one is instead of getting SFU stamped on your boarding pass - pay the money for a purple one and then have J and 1A put on it!;)
