If you get to the airport early and these are available and you request them (and you're fit and well), do you have to pay extra for them, even though you've already paid extra for PE anyway? I just rang Virgin about this and they told me I'd have to pay £50 each. Thank you.

PE Exit row seats are free of charge, Katie - go for it!

At the airport they sometimes reserve the PE exit seats for parents with babies and todlers, although not always. You only have to pay in economy, so I am afraid you were given the wrong information there.

I've had exit seats in PE and never had to pay for them.

I presume you are referring to your flight to MCO later this month, if so then bear in mind that there are only 4 exit seats available. I have asked for them at check in to be told they are already booked and then given at boarding - so it doesn't hurt to ask.

Sailor - think you may be referring to bulkheads rather than exit seats?

The reason I ask is that my husband is very tall, not fat or anything, but very long legs and even PE seats are not that big for him. If we could secure the exit seats then life would be so much easier for him. We have been flying since the time when PE didn't exist and the only way to get seats to fit him (and my 6' 6" sons) was to get to the airport 3-4 hours before the flights and throw ourselves ( and £60 each) at the mercy of the check-in crew. I don't mind getting to check-in early and we're staying in a hotel overnight to make sure we are there early, but I was a bit concerned about paying yet another £50. I am re-assured that I was given wrong info and hope that the exit seats are still available when we get there. Thank you all for your help.

Katie :)

P.S. Incidentally, last time we flew Virgin from Manchester we were upgraded to Club (as it was then) which was very nice and a very nice check-in lady requested bulk-head seats for our return journey when she saw hubby's height. However, this was a wrong move as Hubby could hardly move his feet/legs at all due to the wall in front of the seats. You live & learn.

I would be extremely concerned if I saw anyone with toddlers/v. young kids being seated in an exit row...[:$]

What use would they (or their parents) be in the event of an emergency evacuation????????

My understanding is that ONLY able-bodied adults get these seats as they may be required to assist in an emergency[?]

VS are always good to me, as I have a back disability they try to allocate me a bulkhead aisle seat in Y, making it much easier for me to get up and stretch throught the flight etc.

I've often wondered if I was to travel in PE, whether row 18 on the airbus would all treated as emergency exit row, which they may be wary of putting someone with a known disability (albeit one that wouldn't stop me getting off an aircraft quick!), or if that applied to just the pairs of seats nearest the exits (not the three in the middle) or none of them at all.. And similarly for all seats in rows 70 and 75 on the lhr boeings?

thanks,

jules.

My mistake everyone. I did mean bulkhead seats. I had the 346 in my mind, as that is what I am normally on, and failed to spot the bulkhead/exit seat distinction. sorry for any confusion

Row 18 is usually a bulkead on the airbus fleet, ie: not immediately in front of an exit row door, so should be able to be used for medical requirements or parents with children, should it come to that, although with the new cabin re-fits, that could change. row 70 and 75 on the LHR 747 are both EXIT rows, so would not be appropriate for medical requirements or parents with children.

Update.
I got 80 H&K seats on the orward flight and these were great. We did ask about exit row but they had gone by the time we checked in. We were pleased we didn't get them when we saw 80 H&K. On our return, we went to check in online only to find that our requested seats of 80 H&K had been taken from us and we'd been allocated 75 A&C which are exit row seats! Needless to say, we'd rather have had 80 H&K but 75 A&C did have masses of leg room.
