G-VROY: The Boeing 767-200 were used on the Manchester-Orlando route. They were on wet lease and only used for one summer.

VS only ever had 1 B767-31AER From Sept 1996 until March 1997 which they leased from Martinair, Reg was PH-MCG.

So, it was sometime after this that:

4 Engines 4 Longhaul

started appearing on the side of VS aircraft?!:D

Plane in the pic looks very much like a 762 to me, so evidently not the same as the 763 leased from Martinair. Were there -200s and -300s leased at various times then?

The a/c in the pic is the one leased from Martinair as per my post above. If you look hereit confirms this.

Thanks for the bigger pic - from that I can see it's a 763 now - extra fuselage section fore of the wings. Usually there's an extra door there - but obviously not in this config...

Well normally the flight crew (pilots, navigator and such) are from the company that owns the plane. Like when BMI's IAD flights were operated by Icelandair, the flight crews were Icelandair pilots.

They wet leased a 747 (-200?) from Air NZ to run, ISTR, the BOS route for a few months. A buddy of mine, since retired, used to be a Captain on the route. He still keeps his really, really old Virgin Crew baggage tag on his flight case: it must be fifteen years old.

When I last met him at home in Auckland about six months he commented on how much he enjoyed that working that route, while coincidentally mentioning how young FA's on VS all seemed...

Cheers, Howard

This plane does look to be somewhat a "hybrid" with two over-wing window emergency-exits instead of a door just forward of the wings.

Having had a look around on a.net, most 763s seem to have two doors forward and two doors aft of the wing. Delta, however, seems to have theirs in the same config that VS/Martinair did.

Ahhh the good old Martinair 763!

The two over the wing exits i believe is an option that can be done instead of a 2nd door further forward. Its down to the carrers preference.

VS did lease other aircraft.

A 737 was leased (G-UKLB) from Air UK Leisure to operate the LGW-ATH route during the early 90's. Obivusly this route was part of the partnership with SEEA at the time. The SEEA deal was originally that SEEA operated the route in VS colours. SEEA went bust in the late 90s and VS took the over the route fully (hence GOUZO getting a UK registration). VS of course stopped LON-ATH post 9/11.
