Flew mco to lgw last week on a economy sale miles ticket, tried to miles upgrade at check in but flight was full so paid $75 for exit seat. At the gate i managed to use miles to upgrade to Upper for the return (a joy i must add), but am i due the $75 back that i paid or should I have paid any tax that i was not asked for? Just wondered what the team on here think as i have never upgraded from a paid exit seat before, thanks Paul

In my opinion, and others will correct me on this, you were extremely lucky to get a) an exit seat albeit with paying $75 dollars and then b) an upgrade with miles at the gate especially on an MCO-LGW flight where UC seats are generally considered gold dust for an upgrade. Therefore, given that scenario and the fact the rest of the cabin would have probably paid Z, D or even J fares, I think it extremely churlish of you to seek a refund of the $75 dollars you paid. If it had been me in that situation I would have been turning cartwheels all around MCO in spite of my 'golden years'

Second that HL

Congrats though Paul, on getting something that most don't get a sniff at! [y]

Of course you should get your $75 back. I assume you had to pay some extra tax, are you sure it was not taken off that?

I agree you should get your money back. If you had just upgraded by miles prior to paying for an exit seat, you wouldn't pay for an exit seat.

One way MCO-LGW Mileage award taxes/fees/surcharges =

Economy: USD 113.50
Upper: USD 163.50

So, $50 difference. You're therefore *technically* talking about $25 'due' back.

I'm with the others on that... getting an upgrade after paying $75 for an exit seat - Hell, I would be celebrating!!!

The last thing on my mind would be 'hell, I gotta get my $75 back'.

I must be lucky but have often upgraded to UC at check in using miles at MCO. However last time I did that they charged me an administration fee of $20[:0] When I said that I never had been charged before they said the fee had been recently introduced. But hey who am I to argue when I am going to sit in UC [8D]

thanks for your thoughts, the upgrade was well worthwhile as it was a full flight and i was not loking forward to doing it in economy, will forgo the $75 as i did enjoy the flight, just a shame we only had a 7 hour flight time! cheers Paul

To clarify - you're only 'forgoing' $25.

The $50 difference in taxes/fees would be collected if you were to play the 'by the letter of the law' game....

How many miles did you use for the upgrade?

Was 25000 return economy, they refunded all 25000 , then took 12500 for the outbound and 50000 for the return, so works out at 37500 for the upper leg effectively

Damn right should get whatever difference in cash back - any airline is quick to charge and we passengers should be equally quick to ask back where due! Heck, where's the charity in this line of business ... answer zilch!

They're still essentially for the airlines benefit. But nice all the same...
