Well seeing as he should be in the air by now I would not be surprised to see something written tomorrow.

In the air? I thought he was leaving a couple of days ago and should be well and truly back in Blighty

I can see a petition coming demanding VS to reinstate T10.

Don't understand replacing a gin with vodka, surely if they had two choices of gin, just cutting one and NOT replacing it would be made more financial sense?[:?]

Does that mean that there will be two types of vodka or was it not served before?

The vodka they're replacing it with is the one they've been pushing in the clubhouse SO my guess is it is sponsored by the drinks company. I've tried a bottle as a gift for an America vodka aficionado friend and frankly he wasn't that impressed. Definitely not worth the premium they're charging for it. You can however buy it online for about £5 less than they're charging for it in Retail Therapy. So doing the math - remove a gin they might have to pay for that is more expensive than the other gin but is requested by fewer flyers and replace with a sponsored vodka without increasing the weight load on flights... 1 bean, 2 bean, 3 bean, 4 bean...

The existing vodka is Grey Goose.

This just in from VS HQ:

ÒImprovements to Upper Class Drinks.

After a lengthy, comprehensive and non-existent consultation period with our most respected and regular Upper Class customers, we're proud to announce a number of improvements in our premier cabin bar service. Tanqueray Number Ten gin is to be replaced with Akvinta vodka, which is a vastly superior product, especially if you don't like gin. Grey Goose will be replaced by Tesco Value vodka and Jack Daniel's by Lidl Scotch Whisky with a barley sugar in the bottom of it. All wines will now be provided on a self-service basis from boxes on the bar; our in-house wine experts have chosen two varieties for your delectation: red and white.

In a fun twist, mixers for drinks will also now be 'self-service' thanks to the installation of a refurbished Soda Stream machine on all flights. Passengers will be invited to 'Get Busy' with the afore mentioned 'Fizzy' appliance, offering all the great tasting drinks you remember from the 80s!

We were also going to put in place similar improvements for our Freedom menu, but then realised we couldn't f**k it up any more than we already have doneÉÓ

A travesty, people; I am appalled. It's bad enough that we're being deprived of a premium gin, but how can you 'replace' it with a vodka?! They still had T10 on our flight back on Saturday - though no limes. Had I known it was on it's way out I may have savoured it a little longer. Or drunk more of it.

What next VS? How about replacing those pesky suites with nice comfy seats?

As for a petition - capital idea! Where do I sign up?

So eloquently put, sir!

Even though I'm not a gin drinker (sorry but I prefer JD and ice) I will be signing the petition later in the day. I know Mrs DA would be extremely put out if she will not be able to have a T10.

Irony is that the Consultation period Dr. Vipond refences in the 'PR' sounds like all of the other 'consultation' periods that have been undertaken in the past - GNF, IFBT etc etc.

Does lead to the question, who do VS or rather the research agency consult about these changes? V-flyer is a fairly large community, surely one of you guys being Au,the tier that must not be named or other criteria, would have shouted if you were contacted.

I mean, have the research agency targeted the market who are Au etc, who have used GNF, IFBT, clubhouse etc or did they just consult the bean counters in VS finance dept?

A very unencouraging response posted

quote:'Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your feedback and comments above.

We'd like to reassure you, Virgin Atlantic continually looks to change and update the onboard product offering and we aim to offer our Upper Class passengers the best alcohol brands available, in keeping with the latest trends.

Recent research told us that vodka has increased in popularity against gin so we're delighted that from July, we will be able to offer the premium Akvinta vodka brand exclusively to our Upper Class passengers.

Whilst this means that Tanqueray 10 gin will no longer available, our Upper Class passengers can still enjoy Bombay Sapphire gin. Gordon's gin is also available onboard.

Best wishes,

Virgin Atlantic.'

Who on earth came up with this ludicrous idea? Names...I want names!

One does wonder who they consulted before making the decision to deprive most of this forums membership of thier drink of choice - I for one shall not be 'replacing' my taxi and takeoff G+T with some nasty vodka and coke.

Some things are worth more than money; premium gin being one of them

Adding the original version of the response before the brand police got a look in:

quote:'Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your feedback and comments above.

We'd like to reassure you as the fare paying passenger that we want to retain as customers, Virgin Atlantic continually looks to change and update the onboard product offering by cost-cutting and pinching pennies in every possible way and we aim to offer our Upper Class passengers the best alcohol brands available based upon whoever is going to give us the cheapest deal, in keeping with the latest trends of letting the bean counters rule the Virgin Atlantic experience.

Recent research conducted in the finance department due to the prohibitive cost of asking our known regular customers told us that vodka has increased in popularity against gin (as both solitary bottles that are loaded on each flight are always finished off, but the vodka is cheaper) so we're delighted that from July, in conjunction with Akvinta we will be able to offer the premium Akvinta vodka brand exclusively to our Upper Class passengers.

Whilst this means that Tanqueray 10 gin will no longer available (due to the cost delta with Akvinta), our Upper Class passengers can still enjoy Bombay Sapphire gin (who do us a great deal, and regularly advertise in our IFE magazine). Gordon's gin is also available onboard, in case Princess Margaret ressurects and takes a flight with us.
Best wishes,

Virgin Atlantic.'
