If I hold a VS ticket to fly on VS metal and I was denied boarding due to overbooking at check-in. I then received my select voucher either having a free return flight or 40,000 miles as compensation. VS then booked me on another non-partnered airline to get me to my original destination, can I still claim my miles and tier points since my original ticket was with VS?

AFAIK, generally, no. Tier points are credited for flights actually flown and if you are re-booked on another airline you forgo the points. You could speak to Flying Club to see if they are willing to do anything for you in this case, particularly if you needed the tier points, though if you have already had the 40'000 miles from the Select voucher I suspect that will be deemed your compensation.

Thanks,
Sarah

yep, that was my first thought when reading the first post, I would hope that FC would be willing to bend the rules if the flight would off meant going from red to silver or silver to gold.

According to the T&Cs, specifically 3.5.1 there is scope for requesting that your miles be added.

We were transferred to AF from BA a couple of years ago because of the canceled return flight. On speaking to BA CS on our return the Miles and TPs were added. This was a good thing for us as the sole purpose of the day trip to Paris were the TPs to get us Silver status.

I suspect in this instance that FC would credit the tier points to you as you clearly intended to travel.

I have already spoken to the CS prior to me posting the question as I am not so convinced with the CS answer.

The answer from CS was 'no' as I didn't fly VS and I already have received my select voucher. I would have thought the select voucher is compensation for the inconvenience caused. I have paid for my flight and intended to travel on VS therefore I would expect to have my mileage for the flight. I then questioned the CS how about had I been put on the following day VS flight? He answered I wouldn't get my select voucher as it is termed as a delay and I would get different compensation and I would then get my mileage as I would have ended up flying VS.

If I was expecting to get 6k miles for my VS flight but received 40k miles from select voucher therefore the compensation is really only 34k miles since I have lost out 6k miles for flying someone else. Strange one this [?]

...but you COULD claim the miles from the 'someone else' you actually flew with - if you have an alliance card that suits.

and did they credit you the TP's for that leg off the flight ?

Also, what type of delay did you suffer because of the switch to another airline ?

Surely that isn't right?

I have never been in the position to be given a Select voucher, but my understanding has always been that you get the voucher, meal allowance and overnight hotel and then, in most circumstances, are put on the next VS flight. So, in that case, you would get miles, TPs and Select Voucher.[?]

Just to fill in some of the blanks. The flight in question was VS201 HKG-LHR. Didn't get on that flight and was put up in an airport hotel. VS ground staff managed to get me out on a 7am QF flight so all in all approx 7hrs delay. Not bad considering.

The VS HKG ground staff noticed I was flying club member and told me i can still claim my miles even flying QF as I was originally purchased a VS ticket.

Well if they don't wan't to give you mile's and TP's, ask them for your 600 euro's

I doubt they will now as VS have already given out a select voucher. I *think* once you accept a select voucher, you are more of less waiving your right to take the delay/IDB any further as VS will argue they have already compensated you in the form of a future free flight or miles.

I'd be miffed. But I can almost see their reasoning: if you hold oneworld status then arguably you would be earning tier points or equivalent on both OW and FC for what is one flight. But that's where my understanding ends, because ultimately, what other cards you hold is besides the point.

It was VS who failed you, and I believe that you should be entitled to your TP.

The fact that you accepted a voucher at the time should not come into it. You shouldn't have to work out what compensation best suits when you've just been bumped or whatever.

That actually raises a couple more questions and a few thoughts.

Does taking the voucher mean you have waived your rights to the EU mandated compensation ?

And as VS are not part off an alliance, unless you get put on one of the code share flights should VS still credit miles and TP's?

Just my thoughts on the second part:

If VS doesn't put you on one of their flights or a code share flight wouldn't it be in their best interest to give the miles and TP's, the cost of these are negligible, the fact that the pax next time around 'may' look to a carrier in an alliance to provide this safety net and in the end, at this time, does VS really want to play hard ass on such a trivial thing as miles and TP's?
