Don't think many others do 32kg as your allowance anyway. 23kg appears to be the standard.

Mr Mason

I was trying to compare like with like and as I said in my post I deliberatly excluded any extra allowances that status might give you.

The 'free' BA allowance is still 23kg/bag even if you are in club / first but you get 3 bags - so 69 kg. You can go up to 32 but you have to pay an excess - see on this page here

http://www.britishairways.com/travel/ba ... blic/en_gb

I don't care what the website says, you will absolutely never be charged for a bag weighing over 23kg in Club World/Europe or First on BA, as per BA's policy.

Have a look for posts on FT to back this up if you wish.

I've only ever come close to the 32Kg mark once! For me I have found the solution to the baggage weight is often resolved in one word ... laundry!

Maybe this is why BA are sinking so fast? BA are tightening the purse strings at the moment, so I think that any charges they can implement on ANY customer will start to be much more common.

One other point: if I have to check baggage, I'd much rather _reduce_ the number of bags I have to take thus reducing the chance of losing a bag, and potentially reduce the time I have to spend waiting at the carousel.

I'm slightly surprised that they didn't pull the health and safety card about reducing the single item weight down to 23kg.

Agreed with others about the disengenuous and condescending manner in which it's written. We all know that it has almost nothing to do with 'making it easier for passengers to understand allowances' and everything to do with reducing service, cutting costs and increasing revenue. Crikey, spin like that could've been written by a politician.

Cheers, H

This is not a wise move, when renting a car with a family, you need less cases not more. You try getting 4 cases in any intermediate US car, it will not go.

Dumb Dumb Dumb move in my book, where is the Virgin Focus group to feed back this idiotic moved.

Oh bu**er, my family's ten cases @ 32kg each (2 each) were bad enough to lug around. we will all have to find another arm to pull the third one, but at least they will only weigh 23kg each.

Ok, I gotta admit I think I'm more shocked about how much people take as luggage for a holiday then the reduction in individual item weight.

Not sinking quite as fast as Virgin Atlantic I'm sure you'll agree. As VS Crew you only have to look at I fly to realise that Virgin made a massive 100 million loss in the first quarter this year and as you're probably bitterly aware, VS are on their second round of compulsory redundancy this year.

Edit by mod to remove the other four quoted replies to make thread easier to follow.... Nick

Why do I get the feeling that you either work for BA or have some kind of grudge against VS?

Or may be an unfortunate who suffered compulsory redundancy ... I didn't see anything wrong with the statement though.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Just taken with other posts, it reads as BA great, VS going down the toilet, or my airline is great, nahnahnah. [B)]

Lets not drift too far from the topic of baggage allowances and how to fit in the kitchen sink.

I am thinking of renewing my gym membership to do weight training after reading this whole thread!! I have just returned from MCO and I only just about managed with a lot of effort to lift my 22kg bag into the car boot. I have never packed more than that into a case. I feel quite pathetic and will be working to achieve the rippling biceps that is required to be a true v-flyer!

I am so glad that you have come out about this - I too was feeling inadequate in terms of how much I take on holiday and my (in)ability to manhandle a greater amount.

My problem is that i travel LHR-IAD on the old allowance (11th Sept) and back MIA-LHR (2nd oct) on the new allowance, so in effect i am restricted outbound as well. [V]

I emailed VS to ask about this and they have said that the new baggage policy will only apply if the booking is made after the 23rd September, so as long as the booking is made before that date even for travel after it the current baggage allowance applies.

(and yes i will be taking the email with me on holiday !!!!)

A-ha - so this only applies to actual bookings made after the 23rd. That helps a great deal with our upcoming Sept/Oct flights; thought we were going to have to buy new luggage. Mrs V will, no doubt, be greatly disappointed.

That is very interesting to know. I may email VS myself and hopefully I will get the same answer and have some written proof to take with us in case we get questioned upon check in.

Thanks,

That is rubbish, I was hoping to take advantage of the 3 bags of 23kgs on my trip home. Great just 30kgs for me then! [n]

Dom

You could try the 'I am flying after the change date so I want the maximum luggage' tactic and feign ignorance or the pre 23rd September limits!

When travelling PE/UC I have often used close to my max baggage allowance and know of many others who do likewise.

With these latest changes, reducing the PE allowance to the same level as Y has taken away one of the incentives PE held for me.

I now see fewer benefits of PE over Y with an exit seat. Whent he prices are close, PE will still win out, but when they are ugely different, Y+ exit seat becomes more appealing.

As an Upper Class Pax I more regulary than not use all of mine so I guess I will just have to pay the penalty for going over the 23KG per case - no major drama.

You can still take 32Kg if you desperately need to ... you just need to pay for it. How very Ryanair! :)
