Simple enough question.

It was posted in the restricted forum and I am sure everyone knows GJ and his lovely sense of humour and I for one especially being a Jock, took no offense as I took it in the spirit it was written.

Lets open this up for a chat then

Ian,

It was locked by a condescending, humorless creature who must be tone deaf to any sense of humor.

It should be well known by ANYONE on this site for more than 5 minutes that I would have the babies of at least 12 northerners on any given weekend during football season (that includes a certain Scottish manager). Not to mention my friends in Leeds. Not to mention my friends in Newcastle.

My post was all about the ridiculously histrionic 'everyone hates the northerners!' thread that erupted in the public space.

And thank you for noticing that I put it in the LOCKED area and in the 'anything goes' area...

Had there been any concerns, the mods all know that I am fully OK with them erasing or changing any of my posts SO LONG AS THEY TELL ME THAT.

In this case, Mummy decided to go ballistic and wag her finger at me.

Whatever. There's no good cultural fit for me here, Ian. I'm tired of sitting properly with my biscuit in one hand and teacup -- pinky up -- in the other.

Cheers and happy travels. The Jackanapes has left the building.

Still dont get it Darren as that fizzled out to more a LHR v LGW/MAN comment as per normal.
There have been a lot more questionable comments before than as mentioned in the thread you quoted.

Well GJ this has saddened my day.

I love your posts and the humour they contain; they brighten up my day. Although I am priviledged to know you in other online fora, you WILL BE missed on V-F and I for one would like to see common sense prevail.

I would now expect ALL posts knocking Hull and other towns to be locked and members reprimanded/banned; especially those in the open forum and esp in TR's [:?][:w]

Hang On GJ.
Was any drink involved during that last post[}:)]

I have never personally met you but to me you seem a top bloke with a wicked sense of humour for which I admire greatly.

I ask the same question to Dave, was any drink involved before you locked the thread, honestly now.
I have been so guilty in the past of posting comments with more than the legal limit inside me.

I have met Dave a couple of times and never have I had the opinion of him as described by you, and fact I find you to be quite similar especially with the very dry humour.

The great thing about this forum is that we can disagree and quite strongly at times but at the end of the day sit back with a tequila sunrise and think bollox to it all.

Dont't leave

Hang on GJ used a word and his thread was locked yet the OP in the thread Darren linked us to usxed the same word and the thread was not locked or edited? AND that thread was in the open part of the site.

Could we have an explanation on why one was ok and one wasn't?

Firstly, thank you to everyone for replying to the topic in a friendly manner.

Now I am going to take my mod hat very firmly off and explain the reasoning behind why the poll was locked.

It is pretty simple really, over the last 6 months or so we the mods have had to deal with a number of complaints by members about other members, it is in MY honest opinion getting stupid, there was a time when the people on here could yank each others chain and everyone left laughing.

However as a site we have gotten to the point where someone can make a comment that 99.9% of us will see as a joke, but that 0.1% will see as slander and start firing off PM's to the mods, start a little flame war or just in general be obnoxious to everyone.

The North - South debate gets a little heated to say the least, so when GJ posted this...

Thank you all for voting; the matter is settled SCIENTIFICALLY. V-Flyer members do not loathe the Northern scum.

Please make a note of it.

GJ

While I see the joke and the vast majority of people will see the joke and can say for certain someone will get bent out of shape about the fact that he is calling people from the north SCUM.

Now just to be clear, I found the humor in it, but as we found out from a TR by the good Dr V, not everyone from the north finds it funny and frankly, it's something that doesn't need to be gone over again.

So it's pretty simple, you can't have it both ways, I would much rather have a fun site where people didn't cry foul when something was aimed in their general direction, but at the same time I must look at something from a PC/nanny state point of view.

I can see where you are coming from but why was the OP in this thread

http://www.v-flyer.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31804

allowed to use said word? and for said word to remain there (and at the time of typing this) and is still there? And on the public part of the site?

I thought the point of the 'Off Topic' forum was for anyone to talk about anything, as long as it wasn't illegal of course? I have to say that it seems a very strange decision to lock this thread, especially when it is on a subject that us often discussed in the national press an on mainstream news and tv channels, yet we can't have a fun poll about it, in an off topic, restricted access forum for members only. Doesn't make sense to me even with the explaination above.

As for the use of the 'word', I think we ALL, know the context it was used in, and I find it very hard to think of a member who would find it offensive.

Exactly What I was attempting to say. In my opinion what is posted on the open forum should be PC - if not them the OP needs to be told and the post deleted/amended/locked etc as a MOD seems necessary. On the restricted 'off topic' we may read things that we dont like (I do sometimes) but then I feel free to ignore them - others I find amusing.

condescending, sure, humorless, I don't think so, but then again, thinking about it, yeah I guess in certain circumstances yes, but not by choice.

Sure, I was at work when this thread got started, as it is I explained why I locked the poll, I logged on when I got home from work, saw this debate going on and would much prefer to hash out the topic in public rather than dealing with it via PM's, IM's or emails.

Yes there is a double standard, but this is still a site where things can be debated.

Actually, it will be interesting to see if GJ logs on and shares the reprimand that I gave him.

Just to point out, in the past, due to complaints by members, TR's have been locked and the author has been asked to change the wording because of complaints from other members in regards to towns and it's citizens being mentioned in what they considered to be an unflattering way.

Let the debate continue.

For the record, all of my TRs are unabridged and censorship free (at least, to the best of my knowledge they are). By comparison, I'd have thought GJ's relatively minor 'transgression' should, perhaps, have been shrugged off and taken in the benign spirit in which it was, no doubt, intended...

Actually, now that I think about it, I think your right, let me run off and do some quick research.

Edit: research done, a disclaimer was added to the TR I am thinking about.

I am taking that post as a fun thing, however as this whole thread is pretty much aimed in my direction, I will say this loud and clear, this really isn't the time or place to be posting it, while I have to laugh at it, if you are serious then fine, I quit as a mod and let the fun begin.

Well I think that would be very sad. I have no idea whether the post was made in jest or not but if such double standards 'DO' apply by any MOD then yes consideration must be made whether or not they remain in such a post.
