Although I'm against the profiteering against these fees, I will stick up for Virgin in respect of them imposing the charges against "their own" cards.

The charges that VS incurs are made by the provider of their card transaction service (e.g. Streamline) rather than the credit card firm who have provided the card to the customer making the purchase (e.g. Virgin Credit Card/MBNA).

From the perspective of VS, they're damned whatever way they go with these charges. There is the argument that the fare should simply be VS cost & profit + the relevant passenger duty & VAT. The flip side is that the "fare" at the outset shows what it costs to get you in the air with ancillary fees added where necessary along the way.

Either way, the consumer will want to be able to compare prices quickly & easily. For the time being that means adding the ancillary costs along the way.

Then maybe VS should find, and move to a cheaper supplier !

I'll remind you of the charges I identified last weekend for EXACTLY the same flight I was thinking of taking.

Expedia - 0 (zero)
E-bookers - 14p (yes fourteen of out finest new pence)
VS - 1.5% = £ 30+

And no, expedia and ebookers hadn't bumped up the base fare to 'hide' the cc fees they were the same as the VS site.

So what's the issue here? Book with Expedia!

Quoting the fee as part of the fare prices would become so confusing for many passengers on the website they wouldn't be able to cope.

When I quote a price for someone I do then mention that that is the total price including all airport taxes and charges but then I mention that if they are paying by CC then there is a surcharge on top of that.

Many people choose to opt for debit card payment so I really don't think anyone is being ripped off at all.
