I flew into Stansted last night and saw some big posters indicating a trial going on in immigration for electronic passport control.

You insert your passport, look at the camera and if its happy it will open the gate. Its like a new generation of IRIS machine, except it works on face recognition not iris matching, and I don't think you need to be registered on a scheme to use it- You just need to be 18+, with a EU passport and a chipped biometric passport.

More info here

Reading the information its been toyed with for a while, including an earlier form at LHR T3.

I wonder if this in its final stages ready for a wider roll out. Not having a Biometric passport, it was not something I could try out, but there was no queue at Immigration anyway y)

Its already in use at East Midlands airport, used on returning from Venice on the 5th January. Very simple to use, passport face down on machine, feet on the two feet marks and thats it, if it likes you you in! Lot faster than the old IRIS system. :)
