I flew into Stansted last night and saw some big posters indicating a trial going on in immigration for electronic passport control.
You insert your passport, look at the camera and if its happy it will open the gate. Its like a new generation of IRIS machine, except it works on face recognition not iris matching, and I don't think you need to be registered on a scheme to use it- You just need to be 18+, with a EU passport and a chipped biometric passport.

Reading the information its been toyed with for a while, including an earlier form at LHR T3.
I wonder if this in its final stages ready for a wider roll out. Not having a Biometric passport, it was not something I could try out, but there was no queue at Immigration anyway y)
