After I made Gold, I had a certain 009 FC membership number for a month or two, and then it changed to a different 009 number (about the time when I actually got my card). Why would that be? Is there any significance to the other digits in the number (e.g. exactly how good a customer I am, and/or whether I'm an awkward sod...)?

No, the first 3 digits determine what level you are (006=Red, 008=Silver, 009=Gold, there are others but these are the main three), the rest of the number is just to make it unique to you. All you FC numbers are linked so it doesn't matter how often the change or which one you use, you will still get any miles.

I was going to post a joke reply wondering whether you knew that 009 IS the prefix for awkward sods. :D Anyhow, in all seriousness...

BA has CIV scores, which I believe are printed on the passenger lists that the crew have. These scores give a numerical assessment of your value/importance to the airline. The scale runs from 0-100 -- gold-card-holders get a rank of at least 39.

I don't know if VS has an equivalent -- I don't believe it lists such a score on the passenger sheets onboard. I looked last time. :)

Those extra special pax have a special status. And there are even status levels within this too.

I was on a flight once with one such person and they were the only person (that I saw) that the FSM came to introduce herself to.

ISTBC but FSM's used to make a point of going around the aircraft and personally greeting all Au FC members by name and welcoming them aboard. Don't think this happens any more.

I don't think it was a requirement, just down to the individual FSM.

And even that doesn't always happen :w

no one has ever come and said hello specially to me !
Do the crew really have a list flagging up good customers or is that just something we like to think they have ?

If you use miles to upgrade and your FC number is missing then presumably you do not even show up as red/sil or gold on the sheet ?

istbc but it shows up as 9999 9999 9999 so your right it doesnt show anything of great importance on their manifest except you used points, which I thought cc used to determine who had priority of short loaded food.

cheers

I came back from Hong Kong in economy on Saturday night. For the first time in 3 years and 60+ sectors during that time, the FSM came back and bought me a glass of champagne soon after take off. I was very surprised to say the least. It's only a little thing, but it does show that VS recognise your loyalty. This was on a full flight as well.

The manifest should highlight UNIQs and that should prompt the FSM and CC to focus special attention. Flying to SFO last week this worked fine on the outbound, on the inbound I may as well have been FC Red.

That said, I do know that sometimes detail does not make it onto the manifest, but all the same, last Thursday night I could read it (stuck on the galley wall) and there were three Au's onboard and no one got a greeting.

If you fly on a redemption your FC number will be printed on the manifest if it got associated with your booking, otherwise in UC at least I think (ISTBC) it's a sequence of005's.

Could someone explain what the threshold for UNIQ is, and what benefits it brings? Or is it a secret?

I have searched but information is pretty scant...

I'd tell you but then I'd have to kill you! :o)

It really is hit and miss as to whether the FSM or cabin crew come up and speak to you as a Gold member. Some will make a point of it, others not so. Sometimes the FSM has come up towards the end of the flight and apologised for not coming sooner but explained that they have been dealing with situations that have arisen in other cabins. It is nice when they do come to you but I've looked on it as a perk and not an expectation. That way I'm not disappointed :D
