I was on vs4 back from JFK the other day - first time in the UCDS. I'd heard the window seats were roomier, so was pretty keen to snag one.
I asked at check in (about 2hrs before departure) and was told no window seats available, but to try asking in the clubhouse. So I asked when I got to the clubhouse, and again was told nothing available, but to check again when the flight closed.
So I asked again about 50 minutes before departure, but still no luck.
As a final attempt, once I boarded I mentioned to the cabin crew that I knew the flight was busy, but I'd really like a window seat if there was anything available.
At that point, they said "should be no problem, the flight's pretty quiet today". Sure enough, about 5 minutes later he came back and said "ok everybody's in their seat now, take your pick of the free seats". I looked round and there were about 7 free window seats. Obviously I questioned it, and was told "we've known for a while this was going to be a quiet flight".
I was pretty irritated at this point. My question is, is there anything that could have happened in the 50 minutes before departure that freed up a load of window seats, or was I repeatedly being fed dud information? I'm tall, so was very anxious not to be stuffed into a cramped middle seat when I needed to sleep.
On an unrelated note, I didn't mind the dream suite too much. Couldn't help feeling there was an arm rest missing on the left, but couldn't be sure.
Thanks
