If either VS or the MCO airport authorities thought it was unsafe for the flight to land and then take off then it would have either been cancelled or diverted.

So virgin lands at 5.20 people won't get cats and buses till around 7 pm. I think this is a minor error of Judgement and timing !

On the flip side, there will be people booked on the return sector who are probably glad to be leaving just as Hurricane Matthew hits the area rather than be delayed for 48hrs+ and contend with hundreds of others whose flights were cancelled. Thomas Cook are also operating today I see.

Fingers crossed everyone stays safe.

Because the hurricane is still well to the SE of MCO on Thursday, it's Friday when people should be more concerned although hurricane force winds are highly unlikely in Orlando, but are possible along the coast. If the airport authorities disagreed with VS, they'd certainly let them know as well.

The MCO departures board shows many flights cancelled - most probably due to advanced planning so that aircraft are not in the wrong location or even on the ground if the hurricane does approach, but still many operating until late in the evening:

MCO is closed from 8pm ET (1am BST) until at least Saturday.

MIA is technically open but all airlines have ceased operations until at least tomorrow morning.

All Disney World & Universal Orlando parks & attractions are now closed until at least Saturday.

enough time for the VS 15 to land and turnaround into the 16 then,

I can imagine a lot of chivvying of passengers to get to the gate early !

Do people think that VS16 will actually leave Orlando this evening ?
It's showing as on time on the website but I must admit this has surprised me
We were due to fly out to MCO tomorrow on VS027 which has now been delayed until Saturday and renamed VS0127 so if VS16 heads back tonight would it sit tight at Gatwick until returning to MCO on Saturday?

There's no reason why not - VS15 looks to be on time and VS16 is due to depart 25 minutes before the airport closes.

The big unknown is Saturday - MCO is scheduled to reopen then but obviously much will depend on the track Matthew takes tonight and how much, if any, damage it causes.

Flight aware showed the 15 landed 19 minutes early.

They will move mountains to try and get it out on time and fly to the UK.

I can see the check-in staff being very forceful with passengers being at the gate on time or indeed early - emphasising the urgency 'be there if you want to get home before Matthew hits ... we won't wait for you...'

When it gets back to LGW tomorrow they will either find somewhere there to park it there until Saturday or do a short to an airport than can park it.

In the meantime, let's keep an eye on Hurricane Nicole!

Glad we got back on Tuesday and hope those still in the effected area get through the next few days safely.

Friends that were supposed to be travelling out today are now rebooked for Tuesday, which was the earliest they could get, so it looks like travel companies are expecting a lot more issues in the coming days.

As Slinky says, watch out for Nicole, the next few weeks could be very difficult and if Matthew decides to curl round again :-O

Virgin don't help themselves though, by sending out incorrect text messages/emails AND having incorrect info on their website.

The original text and email I got yesterday about our delayed flight was incorrect so I had to call. Then the website had the wrong information about the dates of the revised flights.

This would explain why the call wait times are 30 minutes+. If they took 5 minutes to double check their info when using their alert system, it would save so many unnecessary calls.

We also got the incorrect alert telling us out Saturday flight was delayed until the same time on Saturday :) closely followed by another one advising delay until Sunday.
Inerestingly have now received a text advising we may be able to fly earlier and to ring if interested.
Don't think we'll bother considering we have just paid an exhorbitant amount to stay in our Disney room (even with a 'generous' 20% discount and I know there is zero chance of Virgin picking up the tab for that :-(

Hi
We have been in Orlando for a week now with very hot sun and daily shortish storm.

We have visited Orlando about a dozen times now and this is the 1st time a storm has affected us.

Yesterday lunch time Thursday we picked up a BBQ meal to eat in the hotel room expecting restaurants to close early evening in advance of the winds and rain.
Later in afternoon we saw signs up stating that restaurants would be closed all day Friday.
So we rushed back to supermarket and managed to grab cereal for breakfast and some bread and chicken for a meal on Friday the shelves were empty with people in the know doing the same.
No water left on shelves but we already had that and beer in room.
Very strong winds and rain lashing down at the moment 10.41am on international drive.
Curfew in place 7.00pm Thursday until 7.00am Saturday morning so stuck in hotel room all day.
We have a high floor room in our hotel so have a good view of surrounding area, there is only the odd vehicle driving up the I4 motorway and cannot see any wind damage yet.

Interestingly enough - there is one aircraft constantly flying up and down the east coast of Florida today (according the flight24) at around 60,000 ft - airline? - NASA :-)

If the MCO arrivals page is correct, there are 8 VS flights inbound to MCO today...

1071, 71 from GLA
1027, 27 and 15 from LGW
1075, 73 and 75 from MAN

ROY and ROS are already enroute from GLA.

1027/27 and 1075/73 are apparently scheduled together, so might be the same aircraft...

Either way, going to be a lot of VS 744s in MCO later today...wonder are they using any 330s as well?

They are using G-VWIN (A346) on the VS015 today.
