Yes it’s really surprising, line is can’t compete with Thomson and Thomas cook... they don’t do upper class though and I have been saving miles for my upgrade. when we went 8 weeks ago there were 150 empty seats.

In fairness it was a while ago since we last managed to get to Cancun, and on our last trip there I have no idea how many empty seats there were as we managed to get bubble seats there and back. Looking at it though, it seems they are going to be completely removing the option to even travel to the area through any Virgin option, either VA or V Hols which is very disappointing indeed, as I definitely do not want to have to opt for Thomson/Thomas Cook based on previous concerning issues with trips I booked through them to continental Europe, especially Thomas Cook.... the less said about them the better for me..

This isn't massively surprising.

The other day there was a thread where somebody mentioned 6 G's on this route! Plus when I looked last year, there were some really low premium fares there.

My hope is that V Hols pick up on that too. For the average Joe member of the public looking to book a package, after the direct route through Virgin Atlantic stops the only options being shown for V Hols customers are via Canada, with Air Canada, no options of flights with a DL connection currently showing when you attempt a dummy booking through V Hols.

Could make a package for someone insistent on travelling with VS/DL quite a bit more expensive as currently, flights and hotel for a trip there going that route would need to be booked separately as far as I can see.

Many, many years ago before VS flew to Cancun, we went via Miami. It was just a short hop down there with Air Mexicana (I think . I can't remember the exact name). It was quite an eye opener. It was near Christmas and the flight was full of Mexicans loaded down with massive Toys R Us carrier bags...some larger than themselves! Somehow, it was all allowed in the cabin. Goodness only knows where it was stowed! The in flight meal is one I will never, ever forget....a stale cheese sandwich and a scoop of stone cold mashed potato!

All the on board announcements were in Spanish so we didn't have a clue what was being said but it could well have been about the extra hour time difference between Cancun and Miami. Suffice to say we spent 5 days of our week long holiday on the incorrect time! It wasn't until we went down to breakfast at 7.00 am on the day we were doing an excursion and the dining room was shut, that we realised....after having stormed into reception demanding to know why it wasn't open...that it was only 6.00 am!

Those were the days.

Sounds almost as hap hazard as Thomas Cook on my experience. Until you taxi to the end of the runway, and the pilot attempts to take off, slows down to a halt, then tried again to take off, again slows down before taxiing back to stand, then after 2 full hours of keeping us on board with no update, they decide to tell everyone they had a problem with one of the engines, you ain't seen nothing ;-) and thats only the first half of the story....

Sad to see a VS route close. We used the flight a few years swaying our annual caribbean trip further west. When we went the flight was full but evidently things have changed. Thinking about it I am surprised that VS can't compete as I think they similarly compete on other routes e.g. Jamaica/Barbados. I have never flown Thomson/Thomas Cook but in my mind (aside from the troubles mentioned above) I view them as more of a bland/basic/dated product to VS with less premium options than BA/VS. Fingers crossed Varadero is proving more sustainable

Any speculation as to where the extra 747 will be deployed? As much as I would love to see VS launch a new route with recent waves I can't help but think that another route will have additional capacity/frequency.
